Gut-Directed Hypnotherapy for IBS

Supporting the Brain–Gut Connection

Living with IBS can feel exhausting, frustrating, and at times difficult to predict or manage. Symptoms such as pain, bloating, urgency, or irregular digestion often affect more than just the body — they can influence confidence, daily routines, stress levels, and a sense of ease in everyday life.

Increasingly, IBS is understood through the relationship between the digestive system, the nervous system, and the brain–gut connection.

Gut-directed hypnotherapy is a structured, evidence-informed approach designed to support this communication in a calm, gradual, and supportive way.

Symptoms like abdominal pain, bloating, urgency, or irregular bowel habits are not simply “digestive issues” in isolation. They often reflect how the nervous system and digestive system are communicating—particularly in response to stress, sensitivity, and internal signals.

Over time, the digestive system can become more sensitive and reactive, particularly when the nervous system has been under prolonged stress or strain.

How Gut-Directed Hypnotherapy Works

This approach is based on clinical understanding of the gut–brain axis—the two-way communication system between the digestive system and the nervous system.

Many people seeking this work describe feeling caught in cycles of anticipation, vigilance, discomfort, or frustration around symptoms — especially when symptoms feel unpredictable or difficult to settle.

Gut-directed hypnotherapy aims to:

  • Reduce sensitivity within the digestive system

  • Support more stable and coordinated gut function

  • Improve how the body responds to internal sensations

  • Calm the underlying nervous system patterns linked to symptoms

Through a structured series of sessions, hypnotherapy helps the body move towards a more balanced and regulated state.

A Structured Yet Individual Approach

This programme combines:

  • Structured gut-directed hypnotherapy protocols developed in clinical research

  • With an individualised therapeutic approach tailored to your experience

This means the process is both:

  • Consistent and grounded in evidence

  • Responsive to your specific symptoms, triggers, and patterns

The aim is not simply relaxation, but supporting calmer and more stable communication between the nervous system and the digestive system

What This Approach Can Help With

This work is most appropriate for:

  • Diagnosed IBS (IBS-D, IBS-C, or mixed type)

  • Functional digestive symptoms

  • Bloating, urgency, or irregular bowel patterns

  • Symptoms that are worsened by stress or anticipation

  • Ongoing symptoms despite medical reassurance

A Mind–Body Perspective

Digestive symptoms are not “all in your head,” and they are not imagined.

The nervous system, emotions, stress responses, and digestive function are closely connected. When the system has been under strain for a long time, symptoms can become more persistent, reactive, or difficult to settle.

This approach works with these patterns gently and gradually, helping the body move towards greater steadiness and regulation over time.

My work more broadly focuses on the relationship between the mind and the body—particularly in conditions where symptoms are influenced by stress, sensitivity, or nervous system patterns.

Gut-directed hypnotherapy sits naturally within this approach, recognising that:

  • The body and mind are not separate systems

  • Symptoms are often shaped by how the nervous system responds and adapts

  • Change can occur by working with these patterns directly

Important Information

Gut-directed hypnotherapy is designed to support the regulation of digestive symptoms.

It is not a replacement for medical assessment or treatment.

This approach is most suitable where:

  • IBS or a functional digestive condition has been diagnosed

  • or appropriate medical investigations have been carried out

Program Information

The programme is delivered over 8 sessions, typically spaced weekly.

Each session includes:

  • A brief review of symptoms and patterns

  • Guidance to understand how your symptoms are maintained

  • A structured hypnotherapy process focused on gut regulation

  • Support for integrating the work between sessions

You will also receive a guided audio recording to use daily between sessions. Daily listening and gentle repetition are important parts of the process, helping the nervous system gradually learn new and more settled patterns over time.

Regular support and check-ins help maintain consistency while adapting the process to your experience and capacity.

8-Week Core + Extension Option:

Phase 1:

  • 8 structured sessions (core protocol)

  • £500 total

Phase 2 (if needed):

2–6 additional sessions for:

  • consolidation

  • complex triggers

  • relapse prevention

  • Extension sessions: £50 per session

Sessions are available online or in person. Research suggests that gut-directed hypnotherapy can be effective across different delivery formats, as the key mechanisms involve focused attention, repetition, and nervous system regulation rather than physical location.

Approach

This programme is informed by research into gut-directed hypnotherapy and reflects structured approaches used in specialist clinical settings, adapted for individual therapeutic work.

The focus is on:

  • safety

  • clarity

Getting Started

If you are wondering whether this approach may be suitable for you, you are welcome to get in touch for an initial conversation.

You do not need to explain everything in detail. The purpose of the conversation is simply to explore your symptoms, your situation, and whether this approach feels appropriate and supportive for you at this stage.

Gut-directed hypnotherapy is a calm, structured way to support your digestive system—by working with the connection between mind and body.
